Capetown and Table Mountain

Capetown with the majestic Table mountain towering over it is one of the most beautiful cities of the world. Although sailors like Dias and Sir Francis Drake were impressed by the beauty of the surroundings when sailing around the Cape Peninsula the first Europeans that reacted to the strategic advantages and had an outpost there were the Dutch that arrived there with Jan van Riebeek approximately 350 years ago. This fact makes Capetown rich in cultural heritage and which can be seen all over. The Castle of good Hope with pentagon form for example was built in 1666 and in the beginning served as a replenishment station for the sailors of the Dutch East Indian Company. This is the oldest colonial building in South Africa and a must for every visitor, just like the stroll along Long Street to admire the old Cape-Dutch architecture.

But that is by far not all that the “moederstad” (mothertown) as the South Africans call it, has to offer. Apart from the surroundings, and the nature and culture a lot has been done in recent times to make Capetown even more attractive to the tourist. The rotating cable car that takes the visitor up the Table mountain while offering him a 360 degree view of Capetown and surroundings or the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront which was built in the harbour area and still has that certain flair whilst offering clubs, bars, restaurants and shopping facilities to the visitor.
