South Africa – Karoo National Park

Only approx. 500 km in the north of Capetown is one of the nicest national parks in South Africa – the Karoo National Park. The park has a size of 33,000 ha and is marked by wide hills, gulches up to higher mountains in the Roggeveld Mountains.

The Karoo, from which the name Karoo National Park comes, is a very sensitive dry savanna with a big rich variety of different succulents, which gives particularly in the spring, after the rainy season in winter (July), a wonderful picture. At this time blossom several succulents prove a wonderful flower carpet above the dry savanna. Beside the big plant wealth one finds in spite of the rather big dryness numerous birds and mammals like zebras, earth wolves and baboons.

Another sign, which distinguishes this park, are the numerous well-preserved fossil findings from the time of the Mesozoic. Dinosaurs, amphibians and numerous other animal species lived at this time in the today’s dry savanna, which was a sea before millions of years. Who is interested in this breathtaking trip, can walk the about 400 metre long fossil trail and look there at the numerous fossil findings. This Fossil-Trail is only not far away from the main-rest camp.

Who wants can cross the national park by his own car or book also controlled tours with rangers of the park. Numerous trails to the walking or also for crossing by the vehicle exist in the Karoo National Park and are recommendable very much. Who likes can also book tours which last several days and can spend the night in one of the camps around and enjoy the unbelievable beauty of the national park completely.
