KwaZulu-Blue Flag Beaches
KwaZulu has a warm, sub-tropical climate, with temperatures in summer averaging 28 degrees being very hot and humid as well as having the most rainfall of the year, while winters, with average temperatures of 23 degrees, are warm, dry and clear. This makes it perfect for tourists all year round. And since the water temperatures of the Indian Ocean are relative stable and average around 21 degrees all year round it is just logical that the beaches and the ocean are the greatest attraction.
So it is interesting to know for any tourist visiting the KwaZulu Coast, that South Africa has 19 beaches that have been awarded the blue flag 2008/2009, four of these beaches being on the south coast of KwaZulu Natal.
The blue flag is an international eco-lable awarded to beaches all over the world that are
excelling in safety, cleanliness, provision of amenities and maintenance of environmental standards. It is awarded yearly and can be taken away if the beach does not fulfil the requirements anymore.
The KwaZulu blue flag Beaches are the Hibberdene Beach, also called the gateway to the Hibiscus Coast. Margate Beach and Ramsgate Beach belonging to towns laying next to each other and Marina/San Lameer Beach.
So if you wish to be on the safe side on a beautiful beach there are enough to choose from. You should only be aware of the fact that these beaches are favourites of the inland South Africans as well during the holiday season so they might be a bit overcrowded but to sunbathe there are enough hidden secret spots that you can find, often just a few meters away from the hustle. Ask the locals…they know them all…
