The Golden Mile - Durban Beachfront

Durban Beachfront

In summer, shortly after the sun has risen over the warm water of the Indian ocean, water temperatures being 20-25°c  , the Durban beachfront starts preparing itself for its visitors.

With the sun and the blue sky overhead nearly every tourists first goal is the Golden Mile. The Golden Mile is the name given to the nearly 6 km of beachfront  that starts in the north of Durban with the  Dunes, carries on with North Beach, Dairy Beach, Wedge Beach, South Beach and ends in Addington Beach, with its  relative small quiet waves,  which are ideal for surf beginners.

All beaches along the Golden Mile are partially guarded by lifeguards  from 8am right up to 5pm. These areas are marked by red/yellow flags. Since the beaches are lined by shark nets that are 200 to 300 meters long and anchored 400 meters from shore these beaches are safe even though the sharks seem to like the Indian ocean just as much as the tourists.

The Golden Mile offers entertainment for kids in the form of free swimming pools, , uShaka-a world class aquarium with a water slides amusement park, Minitown, which is an exact miniature replica of Durban and much more. Convenient showers are placed all along the beach for the sun worshippers and bathers. The waves fulfill for the wishes of the surfers. And an empty tummy is nobody else’s fault than your own since there are feeding places all along the promenade.

So, go out there, have fun…but please don’t try to copy the Durbanites and surfers and try walking on the sand without anything on your feet on a hot sunny day…your feet wont thank u for it…
